Voter fraud concerns are being monitored by the U.S. Department of Justice which is sending 800 federal observers and Department personnel to 59 jurisdictions in 23 state

Voter fraud during the Nov. 4, 2008 election is of special concern to the U. S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and its Civil Rights Division. Although state and local governments have primary responsibility for administering elections, the Department is charged with and committed to protecting the rights of all citizens to access the ballot on Election Day, and to preventing and prosecuting voter fraud.

Voter Fraudulent Registrations

In an article in the Christian Science Monitor (10/19/08), obvious voter fraud was cited in:

  • Lake County, Indiana where officials stopped processing about 5,000 applications after the first 2,100 looked bogus.
  • In Nevada, ACORN, which was paid $800,000 by Obama and to "Get Out the Vote" registrations included the names of Dallas cowboy stars. ACORN's offices in Nevada were raided by the Secretary of State and all their records confiscated. The raid was undertaken because officials believed there were other phony registrations that workers were not catching. ACORN investigation are on-going in 14 states.
  • Ohio was found to have 200,000 new registrants that showed mismatches with records in other government databases.
  • Tests comparing different statewide voter databases have found people registering in two states simultaneously.

Voter Fraud Watch Program

Voter fraud complaints can be filed with the DOJ's Civil Right Division and will be handled by the U.S. Attorney's Offices across the country and also the Criminal Division' s Public Integrity Section. They can also be directed to the local FBI offices.

According to a statement by Attorney General Michael B. Mukasey, "On November 4, hundreds of Department of Justice lawyers, monitors and observers will be working throughout the country to help make sure that all Americans who are entitled to vote are able to do so, and that the elections accurately represent the will of the people."
