Get to know the real Michelle Obama with some interesting personal facts that have emerged over the presidential campaign.

During Michelle Obama’s many TV-show interviews on the campaign trail such as The View, The Daily Show and The Tonight Show, no matter what the party-affiliation, few can deny that she came across as a very intelligent down-to-earth family-orientated woman, and the intellectual equal of her husband.

The future first lady has, at times, been accused of oversharing; giving away too many private details of her and Barack Obama’s home life. But Michelle likes it that way. She is quoted, in the UK’s Daily Mail, August 6th, 2008, as saying“ I want the public to know exactly who they are voting for on November 4.”

Family

  • For her first date with Barack Obama he took her to see Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing. She was his boss at the Chicago law firm, Sidley & Austin, where she was one of only 14 black lawyers.
  • In an article by Harriette Cole of Ebony magazine, Sept 2008 “The Real Michelle Obama,” Michelle called her husband "her best accessory." We complement each other in almost every respect. In the way that a wonderful pair of shoes looks great with a good suit."
  • She has been outspoken in her comments of the couple’s domestic life. Saying that Barack has smelly socks and embarrassing her husband by commenting on his snoring. According to Michelle, her daughter’s won’t cuddle up in bed with their father as he is too snorey and stinky!
  • Michelle and her husband stay in touch while traveling by using computers with webcams, which she bought for the family to say goodnight to each other when apart.
  • During the campaign, Michelle refused to spend more than one night away from home and insisted on having one family sit-down meal all together once a week.
  • Totally committed to her family, Michelle intends to be “mom-in-chief’ once in the White House, and according to Fox & Friends; Fox News November 6, 2008, reported that she wants to take on a role more like first lady Laura Bush than Hillary Clinton.
  • Michelle loves playing sudoku and eating Barack’s home-cooked chilli.

Career

  • After the death of her father and a close friend in the 1990s she left the cut-throat world of corporate law and took a job in the Chicago mayor’s office, where she helped build programs to for the young people of Chicago. Recently Michelle scaled back her job at the University of Chicago hospital (where she was the main wage earner of the family), to support Barack during the 2008 U.S. presential campaign.

Fashion

  • Michelle admits to shopping on line and favors outfits by American labels such as J Crew. She has also worn dresses from New York’s Donna Rico, Thai-born American fashion designer Thakoon Panchigul, Chicago designer Maria Pinto (who designed the turquoise dress for her speech at the DNC), and New York designer Narciso Rodriquez, who created her controversial black and red election-night dress.
  • In July 2008, Michelle was voted top of the best dressed list by Vanity Fair. The magazine refers to her as “our lady in sheath,’ in reference to her passion for sheath-style dresses and simple tailoring. Her fashion style has been likened to that of former first lady Jackie Kennedy.
