McCain Campaign Depicts Obama as Un-AmericanMcCain Goes Too Far with Obama Terrorist Ties
The McCain campaign may have gone too far by trying to connect Obama with former radical William Ayers and referring to his middle name of Hussein.
With Barack Obama steadily pulling ahead in the polls, John McCain’s spin doctors are getting desperate. So desperate, in fact, that they have resorted to depicting Obama as a militant Arab with terrorist ties. To do this, they implemented a two-pronged attack. McCain Attempts to Connect Obama with TerroristsTheir first strategy was to link Obama with 70’s radical William Ayers. The reality is that their only connection was serving on several non-profit boards in the 1990s, and Ayers’ hosting of an event early in Obama’s political career. Next, there were repeated references to Obama’s middle name of Hussein at several Republican rallies. This was strictly intended to depict him as un-American. The Old McCain ResurfacesWhen public opinion began turning against the McCain campaign for taking on such a negative tone, his team backed off. Even McCain himself may have had an attack of conscience. At a town hall-type meeting in Minnesota, a woman stood up and told McCain that Obama scared her because “he’s an Arab.” McCain look both ashamed and embarrassed by this comment and responded by telling her that he was a “decent” man. When another supporter at the same meeting expressed fear at Obama possibly becoming the president, McCain again defended his opponent by referring to him as “a decent person and a person that you do not have to be scared of as president of the United States." Apparently much of the audience did not want to hear this, as they booed. We have to wonder why anyone would believe the slander against Obama. If he is indeed a Moslem, why do he and his family attend a Christian church? He rose above humble beginnings to graduate from Harvard Law School and become the first black president of the Harvard Law Review. This man represents everything that is good about America – that anyone can succeed if they apply themselves, no matter the color of their skin. Is Racism Alive and Well? Racism in America is nothing new. In the 1960s, Alabama Governor George Wallace was guilty of the same scare tactics. In his bid for the presidency, he also used racism to instill fear in the voters, and created a climate of hate. Can this still happen in the 21st century? Perhaps not. McCain is not a racist, or a bad person. He has served his country admirably as both a soldier and a senator. We can also point to Barack Obama’s ever-widening lead in the polls as evidence that most Americans will not abide hatred and racism.
