Barack Obama has come under fire for comments made last July by his pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Among the statements that have garnered the most criticism are claims that the U.S. had brought on the 9/11 attacks for it's own terrorism. Wright cited the bombing of Hiroshima, and that America has "supported state terrorism against the Palestinians and black South Africans."
"Now", Wright continued, "We are indignant because the stuff we have done overseas is now brought back to our own front yards." Ron Paul expressed this view at a Fox News debate in May (then candidate Rudy Giuliani promptly condemned the idea much in the same way that many are condemning Wright today).
Sean Hannity has been a voiciferous critic of Wright (and Obama by association) for some time, and has now begun claiming that he saw this "problem" before anyone else did. By contrast, Hannity has called Pat Robertson "sane" and accepted an honorary degree from Liberty University, founded by the late Jerry Falwell.
Pat Robertson, who said in a press release the following:
" We have insulted God at the highest level of our government. Then, we say, 'Why does this happen?' It is happening because God Almighty is lifting His protection from us. Once that protection is gone, we are vulnerable because we are a free society."
And Jerry Falwell. Who famously said of the 9/11 attacks on Robertson's television show The 700 Club
"I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this happen.'"
He later apologized, but said later of the attacks "If we decide to change all the rules on which this Judeo-Christian nation was built, we cannot expect the Lord to put his shield of protection around us as he has in the past."
Now this is not to infer that Sean Hannity believes the 9/11 attack were brought on by God lifting his protection from us because the US is a free country that allows people to worship paganism, have abortions and has equal rights for women. Hannity celebrates America too loudly and proudly to do such a thing.
But it is worth asking. Among Falwell, Robertson and Wright, who is more correct as to what is to blame for 9/11? And if none of them are, what is to blame?
